Our Team

Fiona Squires – Manager

Originally from the UK, Fiona moved to New Zealand in 2016 with her five-month-old daughter and husband.  Although a significant portion of her professional background was spent in marketing and events, Fiona has a wide range of experience working with young people in the not-for-profit sector.

As an experienced volunteer youth mentor, Fiona has experienced first-hand the difference having a kind caring non-judgemental adult role model can have on a young person’s life. In addition to this, she has helped plan, develop and deliver programmes designed to help combat the growing threat of child sexual exploitation. These programmes were delivered via a formal curriculum within schools and a more informal process as part of a detached youth work team. Before moving to New Zealand. Fiona’s role involved working with young people to get their voices and opinions heard by the local Government and authorities.

Fiona’s job is to keep the organisation running. As manager, her role is to oversee all the activities that happen within Big Brothers Big Sisters of Manawatῡ, both match related and non-match related. She reports into the board and is the person to go to if you have any questions, complaints or just for a chat! She loves to talk about anything and will always have time to chat with you.

Mel Roff – Caseworker

Born and raised on a small farm in the Manawatῡ, Mel is a qualified social worker. She recently graduated from Massey University and is married with two children. She enjoys cooking, running, being outdoors, and hanging out with her friends. Mel’s main job is to support all the matches we have!

As our caseworker, Mel is there to support, advise and guide our matches. She will be the one calling and checking in regularly and is there to be a resource to everyone involved in the programme. Mel is committed to supporting and empowering individuals and their families, and this ethos resonates well with us at BBBSM. She has a head full of great ideas and is more than happy to share them. Mel also loves a good old yarn and can chat away for days so please feel free to pick up the phone or drop her an email.
